Fur jackets, vests and coats came in real or faux versions that varied from colorful and funky to straight-up sophisticated.

But that wasn’t all. Color played a very strong roll. Black and white continues forward looking as sharp as ever, especially in this seasons ever-popular houndstooth check print. Want something to make your mouth water?

Fall colors come in chocolate, honey, vanilla, plum and nutmeg. (They may not be edible, but they’re definitely wearable.)

And finally, denim, denim and more denim was the other big news from MAGIC. Denim came every which way but simple.

Painted, frayed, patched, graffiti-printed, studded, dusted and rusted styles were all shown indicating a continuation of the eighties influence, which seems to be proving that too much is never enough.

WHAT BEGAN as a modest gathering of 1920s aficionadoes has grown to become the mother of all picnics: nearly a thousand authentically costumed people striving to turn the clock back and party like it’s 1929.

There’s no event more eagerly anticipated among members of the Art Deco Society of California than the annual “Gatsby Summer Afternoon,” held on a (usually) sunny Sunday each September on the sylvan grounds of Oakland’s Dunsmuir House and Gardens, a 40 acre estate nestled in the Oakland foothills.

If you’re going to attend the Gatsby, the first thing you’ll need is a vintage or vintage-looking outfit from the era. For the new millennium, brilliant diamonds sparkled in modern mesh and abstract-shaped settings of silver, gold and platinum. These spoke to the futuristic metallic fabrics and shapes designers showed in leather, nylon, and polyamide. At the same time, vividly colored gemstones like turquoise, peridot and coral complemented the organic fabrics and mixture of textures, like velvet and silk, so many designers displayed.

Though contradictory, these two looks underscore the importance of fine jewelry accessories and the celebratory mood as we approach the new millennium.
