“The synergy between fashion and fine jewelry is stronger than ever, with two major trends echoing the diversity of the Fall ’99 looks from the runways,” says Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center in New York City.
For the new millennium, brilliant diamonds sparkled in modern mesh and abstract-shaped settings of silver, gold and platinum. These spoke to the futuristic metallic fabrics and shapes designers showed in leather, nylon, and polyamide. At the same time, vividly colored gemstones like turquoise, peridot and coral complemented the organic fabrics and mixture of textures, like velvet and silk, so many designers displayed.
Though contradictory, these two looks underscore the importance of fine jewelry accessories and the celebratory mood as we approach the new millennium.
