Two big misconceptions exist about 1920s fashion. Contrary to popular belief, women didn’t always wear fringed flapper dresses with feathered bandeaux and a long strand of beads. There were many other styles of evening dresses. The other misconception is that hemlines in the ’20s were worn way above the knee. No matter what John Held, Jr. showed in his classic cartoons (right), it just wasn’t so.

Evening clothes were made of luxuraious fabrics -- mostly silks — in velvets, taffetas and chiffon. In the mid-1920s, sleeveless silk chiffon dresses were were often embellished with elaborate beadwork. Sadly, few of these beautiful dresses remain in wearable condition today because silk chiffon dries out and disintegrates with age, and, if the dress was stored on a hanger, the weight of the beadwork often stressed the shoulder fabric, causing damage.

Fur jackets, vests and coats came in real or faux versions that varied from colorful and funky to straight-up sophisticated.

But that wasn’t all. Color played a very strong roll. Black and white continues forward looking as sharp as ever, especially in this seasons ever-popular houndstooth check print. Want something to make your mouth water?

Fall colors come in chocolate, honey, vanilla, plum and nutmeg. (They may not be edible, but they’re definitely wearable.)

And finally, denim, denim and more denim was the other big news from MAGIC. Denim came every which way but simple.

Painted, frayed, patched, graffiti-printed, studded, dusted and rusted styles were all shown indicating a continuation of the eighties influence, which seems to be proving that too much is never enough.

Cowboy boots, originally designed for cowboys, have set off a craze in today’s fashion world. Many people love wearing these boots because of their ultra comfort and trendy designs.

Most cowboy boots are made out of animal skin like boa, sheep, ostrich, and stingray. But if you’re buying your first boots, it’s better to choose one made out of stingray. Though other skins are better-looking, stingrays can last up to 20 years. However, stingrays have hard skin, which means you need it to comfortably suit your feet. Other animal skins can adjust to your foot size, but that will cause slippage in the boots.

Style. Cowboy boots come in a variety of styles but the most popular one is the Western style. The Western style boots have a high shaft and a one inch high angled heel with a very pointed toe. The style is very fashionable and contemporary. The boot shaft rises till the ankle and the heel is short and square. They also come with laces.

Mens fashion hasn’t changed much since the 1920s, especially business and formalwear. A notable exception: casual wear.

At right, note this gentleman’s linen knickers and two-tone spectator shoes, trim-fitting V-necked sweater and bow tie. (Note: several designers, most notably Armani, unsuccessfully tried reintroducing knickers in 1996 as golf wear.) Bow- and standard windsor-knot neckties were equally popular. Some ties were made of knit cotton and had squared-off bottoms, a look successfully brought back in the 1970s. This casual look was topped off by an English driving cap or a summer-weight brimmed hat, such as a Panama straw.

Sporty styles for warm weather included the yachting look: a navy blazer with gold buttons, white slacks and a yachting cap, and the Palm Beach suit of tropical weight wool or linen, in white or ivory.

For many, jeans are the most valuable player in your wardrobe. Usually, this isn’t because they’re the most expensive piece of clothing you own, or even the best-looking. Instead, it’s their versatility that’s important, as you can wear jeans around the house, in the workplace, on a date, or on casual outings.

Choose a wash.
Look for stonewashed jeans and shades of dark blues or muted greys, which look classic and go with everything. Keeping a few pairs of timeless jeans in your wardrobe is a good idea, and it allows you to buy jeans in trendy colors and washes, such as dirty washes and acid washes, to keep up with current styles.

Consider the length.
Think about which shoes you will primarily be wearing with your jeans. Straight cut jeans and relaxed fit jeans look great with athletic shoes, while bootcut jeans and premium denim jeans look great with dressier shoes and low boots.
