Junior and contemporary buyers have a wide range of choices for Spring 2001, according to the looks on the runways at two fashion shows held this week at the California Mart. The shows, hosted by Directives West and Barbara Fields buying offices, offered a range of fashion that spanned several decades of the past century, including sophisticated 1940s-inspired dresses, flirty 1960s prints, 1970s glitz and glam and 1980s high-charged style.

The elegance of the 1940s, the extravagance of the 1980s and styles from the decades in between– that sums up Spring 2001 according to Directives West’s “California Kaleidoscope” fashion show held Oct. 3 in the California Mart’s Fashion Theater.
The show packed ‘em in for a thorough trend overview that featured junior, contemporary and swimwear designers’ best looks for the season. The show also spotlighted designers Hot Kiss as its featured junior designer, Single as its sportswear designer in the spotlight, and Del Rosario as its favorite social/eveningwear designer.

Summer 2000 took center stage at the Collective Fashion Show held January 14 in the California Mart’s Fashion Theater. The show presented a market overview for retailers and launched the five-day run of the Mart’s Summer 2000 Fashion Week. Several designers were featured, highlighting the season’s trends.

Color and prints stood strong-turquoise, fuchsia, yellow and orange brightened Summer’s palette while polka dots, psychedelic or Pucci-esque, and animal prints (zebra, leopard, python) displayed Summer’s wild side.

Sheer and lightweight fabrics came layered and crinkled in silhouettes hanging away from the body, showing the season’s softer side. Silk, chiffon and linen were offered in subdued colors, white seeming a favorite.

Cropped pants were still seen across the board,but pretty dresses and skirts dominated the runway showing signs that Summer is the season for femininity.
