Parents trying to keep their children entertained over the holidays are tightening the purse strings and planning to spend £92 - half of what they splashed out last year, research has shown. However; despite reducing their budget, parents admit they will still have to cut back on their own treats in order to pay for days out for the children, according to new figures.
In 2008, the average family spent twice as much (£185) on activities to keep the children busy during the school breaks.
Research by OnePoll on behalf of the Moneysupermarket.com Vouchers team suggests that 27% of parents will give up meals out and 25% will stop buying new clothes and 23% will have to cut back on the weekly food shop in order to fund the holiday.
In an attempt to make their money go further, two thirds of parents, 61%, say they will be using discount vouchers to cut the cost of keeping the children entertained.
Sian Harrison, Moneysupermarket.com’s voucher expert, said: “Despite the tightened purse strings, parents are not letting kids go without this half term.
“By using vouchers, parents can save up to 50% on restaurants and popular attractions like Alton Towers and Chessington and still have a fun day out with all the family.”
